So, two of my kids are absolutely mad about Dylan O'brien who plays Stiles on the popular TV series TeenWolf. Without any hesitation it was brought to my attention that he would be playing the lead in the upcoming movie version of The Maze Runner. Naturally, that translated to read-the-book-so-we-can-see-it-together! I jumped at the opportunity and now I can share it with you!
First off, let me say that I love books that have characters strategically shrouded in mystery. When Thomas, Dylan O'brien's character, wakes up delivered to the Glade he has no memory except for his name. Immediately we are pulled into the story - intrigued and wanting to find out more. What the heck are a group of teenage boys doing raising themselves in a glade anyway? Dasner does a superb job of convincing us that what these boys are going through is very real.
The story is filled with a terrific balance of action, mystery and terrifying moments. You will definitely not be bored by this narrative. A word of caution, there are some graphic moments of violence so if you, or your child are sensitive you might want to preview beforehand.
My only gripe with this fantastic novel is the level of dark. I found myself wondering if everything in the story continues to delve so deeply into despair why would these kids have the gumption to go on? and would I if I were in their shoes? It would be nice if we at least had a glimmer of hope for the future of these well written characters.
All in All, I give The Maze Runner a 4.5, hats off to James Dashner!
